Dan Davis
State's Attorney
Dan has served five terms as the Windham County State's Attorney, and on Tuesday, November 7th he is seeking his sixth term. Prior to his first election as State’s Attorney, Dan served as a member of the Vermont State Police for over eleven years. Dan received his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State College, his master’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University, and his law degree from Western New England College School of Law. Dan was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1984 and has practiced criminal law exclusively since 1986. Dan offers the most experience for the position and has a proven record of accomplishment that he is again proud to put before the voters.
Since Dan was last elected, his Office has taken more jury trials to verdict than any other prosecutor’s office in the state. His Office’s conviction rate for jury trials over the past several years has exceeded Vermont’s statewide average. The role of a prosecutor is to seek justice which often requires tough and sometimes difficult decisions; Dan does not shy from such decisions.
Dan continues to work effectively with police officers from state, county and local police departments, as well as social workers from DCF, probation officers from the Department of Corrections, and others from the various agencies and departments working in Vermont’s criminal justice system. Dan was one of the first state’s attorneys in Vermont to designate an attorney to handle juvenile cases exclusively. This designation first took place in 1988 and continues to this day. Not only does this attorney prosecute those crimes committed by juveniles, but, more importantly, also handles those cases where children have been abused or neglected by their parents or caregivers.
Since 1995, Dan’s Office has had a Domestic Violence Unit assigned to prosecute crimes of domestic violence. Dan’s Office collaborated with the Women’s Crisis Center and local law enforcement to obtain federal funding for the Unit. The Domestic Violence Unit for the Office of the Windham County State’s Attorney continues to be a model for other such units throughout Vermont.
During Dan’s initial campaign for Windham County State’s Attorney, he promised that he would seek justice for crime victims. Dan has carried out this promise since his first day in office.
Dan lives in Westminster with his wife of 32 years, Mary Sullivan Davis. Mary is a former mathematics teacher in the Brattleboro and Bellows Falls school systems; currently she teaches math and is the Dean of Faculty at Vermont Academy. They have two grown sons, Dan Jr. and Jonathan. Their daughter Katie is a college freshman.
