Valerie Stuart is a Public Relations and Marketing Consultant and has been in the communications field for over 25 years. She also is the Marketing Director of the Strolling of the Heifers, a non-profit organization founded in 2001. The organization’s primary fundraiser, the Strolling of the Heifers Parade & Festival, has been named a Top Ten Summer Event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce for the past six years. The event raises money for the Heifer Educational Fund, which has distributed over $125,000 to schools and other organizations for projects that increase young people’s understanding of the importance of sustaining local agriculture in order to preserve Vermont’s heritage and appeal to tourists.

Valerie began her career in New York City as the editor of the graphic design magazine, Graphic Design: USA. Later, she was the partner in charge of public relations and marketing at Peterson & Blyth Associates, a leading corporate and brand identity consultancy that served Fortune 500 companies ranging from Pepsi to Proctor & Gamble. During the ten years she worked at the 50-person design firm, she placed stories about the firm’s work in magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Business Week and The Wall Street Journal. She also was an active member of the Public Relations Society of America, Advertising Women of New York and the Design Management Institute.

Since moving to Vermont in 1994, Valerie has handled public relations and marketing projects for Brattleboro Savings & Loan, Friends of the Sun, Fleming Oil Company, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Youth Services, Health Care & Rehabilitation Services, Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, The Student Conservation Association and World Learning. She also worked for Youth Services for 8 years, where she spearheaded the $1.2 million non-profit’s public relations and fundraising initiatives, and as the Development Director at the Greenwood School for one year.

Shortly after moving to the Green Mountain State, Valerie served as Media Liaison for the Speaker of the Vermont House Michael Obuchowski. She also served as a Vermont Democratic Party delegate. She was a charter member of Brattleboro’s Sunrise Rotary Club and is a member of that club today. A past president and board member of the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, she currently serves on the Museum’s Fundraising and Marketing Committees. She also is a member of Brattleboro’s Alliance for the Arts as well as the Alliance for Building Community's Economic Development Advocacy Group. The Economic Development Advocacy Group’s focus is on increasing the rate of employment of Windham County area’s low-income residents.

Valerie speaks Spanish and French and enjoys travel, gardening, cooking, sports and the outdoors. Her first love is horseback riding. She is married to attorney John Mabie, who is a partner at Gale, Corum, Mabie & Prodan. The couple have a 17-year-old son, Ian, and a 15-year-old daughter, Lauren. They reside in a 150-year-old farmhouse in West Brattleboro with their dog, Milo, and cat, Theo.
