We have a new Secretary
We are pleased and excited that Barbara Riker has volunteered to be our new secretary and she was voted in as secretary at the March meeting. Her expertise is a welcome addition to the executive board and we can't thank her enough.
With a full executive board, we will now focus on sub-committees.
We need your help and we're asking for it...it's just that simple. If everyone could just give a little of their time to help with one of these sub-committees we'll really have something to celebrate come November. To those who haven't been involved before, it really is rewarding working towards a goal with like-minded people. We also do try to have a little fun along the way . We have four sub-committees which should give most everyone something they can volunteer for that they feel comfortable with. I know it's still early but signing up early will make planning go smoother down the road.
1) Headquarter Committees-Brattleboro/Bellows Falls/Western Windham County: Find and lease (or obtain a donation of) a space in Brattleboro, a space in Bellows Falls and possibly one in the Wilmington/Dover area suitable for a Democratic headquarters this fall. Maintain and staff each of the HQs.
Sandy Shriver will chair the Brattleboro committee and can be contacted at ashriver@potterstewartlaw.com
Lamont Barnett and Reed Webster will co-chair the Bellows Falls committee and can be contacted at auknight@sover.net and reedweb@comcast.net respectively.
We're also looking for someone interested in making a HQ available to the western area of Windham county. In having our HQ in Bellows Falls in '06, many people became engaged that otherwise might not have simply because of the time and money to travel. We feel it's really important to have a presence in this area even if it's only a part-time HQ...just someplace where we can make available to people the signs, bumper stickers and literature for our candidates.
2) Fundraising Committee: Raise funds for the WCDC including doing a fundraising letter and organizing the Davenport Day Dinner (our big event). There has also been talk of other events, one in particular that I think people will like is a low cost B-B-Q. So all you folks out there interested in helping here, please contact Sandy Shriver at ashriver@potterstewartlaw.com as he will chair this committee.
3) Grassroots Action Committee:
To improve the effectiveness and results of Grassroots actions.
To provide more channels for recruitment of volunteer workers, and to make better use of our volunteers' time and energy.
To encourage Democrats at the Town level to assume more responsibility for their own Grassroots actions. (Might we dare aim for upsets in the remaining Republican legislative districts??)
An underlying reason for all of our organizational efforts, of course, is to BEAT DOUGLAS this time. We know how Windham County usually votes, but past results are no reason for complacency this time. We will need to pull out all the stops to help deliver a state-wide Mandate for Change!
Responsibilities that could be given to the WCDC Subcommittee for Grassroots Action include the following:
a). Serve as liaison with Town Democratic Committees, to encourage, plan and execute the following Grassroots actions:
Voter checklist ID update
Door-to-door campaigns on behalf of the VT Democratic Party and/or candidates
New voter registration
Visibility events and signage (including visibility at Polling places on Election Days)
Early voting
Rides to the polls
b). Assist in formation of a Town Committee in those towns that are not yet organized.
c). Serve as liaison with the State Field Director for executing state-sponsored Grassroots actions in Windham County.
d). Serve as liaison with a state-appointed Field Staff person for Windham County, and assist this person in recruiting volunteers for campaign activities.
e). Assist in determining the feasibility for a third County Campaign HQ in the Dover-Wilmington area, and identifying local leadership for setting up and running this HQ.
f). Assist in recruiting and coordinating volunteers for staffing of Campaign HQ's, in support of local HQ committees for each location. Also, if requested by individual campaigns, to assist in recruiting volunteers for their actions (such as door-to-door campaigns) and coordinating their literature drops, phone banks, visibility events etc.
g). Assist in mobilizing and coordinating volunteer workers from organizations such as Democracy for America, Nuclear-Free Vermont, and others.
Bill Johnson has said he will serve on this committee and will chair it if no others step forward. Please contact Bill at billjnsn@sover.net
4) Communications Committee: Goals are to keep the website updated with current events and news that Windham County Democrats would be interested in. To keep committee members posted of actions that the WCDC is taking. Also to form a group interested in writing letters to the editor.
Reed Webster will chair this committee and can be contacted at reedweb@comcast.net.
2008 is here...time to take back our country and our statehouse
Please get involved with your government...as Doris "Granny D" Haddock says...
"Democracy is not something you have, Democracy is something you do".
Do you know of an event that we should post here?
If you know of an event in or near Windham County that would be of interest to the community, please email our site manager Reed Webster
